“Actually, I think I’ll stay awake. Lemme put some clothes on and find water. I swear to God, I’m gonna die of dehydration if I don’t drink something soon. Preferably something without alcohol in it, but you know the saying. Beggars can’t be choosers.” He patted around the dark for his phone. “I only remember ordering a pencil sharpener off Amazon.”
“Well alright, get yourself together. Hydration is for everyone.” They had been sipping from a glass of water the entire time.
“That was certainly part of it. Drinking obviously occurred in addition to adventures in testing shades of nail polish on a whim, watching weird movies, online purchases and who knows what else. I’m still catching up a bit.“
“Turn…Turn the light off.” Jesus, Saima. Are you trying to blind him? “My head feels like someone stuffed it with cotton wool, my mouth is really dry, there’s neon green nail polish slathered across my wrists…” What on Earth happened last night? “I just might go back to sleep.”
Do you really want the answer to that? Nonetheless, they do humor him by turning the lights off. “Maybe going back to sleep would be the good option. Thankfully, it wouldn’t hurt you to get a little more time in. ” They can’t help but laugh a bit at Alfred’s condition, even though they were similarly worn out from shenanigans.
“Maybe some rest would actually allow you to get a picture of what happened.“
“I wish I could do that.” He really did. Then he could get a certain someone off his back about ‘not eating healthy enough’, but he’d also have to deal with the issue of ‘eating too many carbs’. People were hard to satisfy these days. “Thanks. I try.”
“Right, it’s definitely something one would have to be able to work to accomplish. And some people don’t have the room for it.” Which was understandable and the main reason why Saima tried not to judge people too harshly about what they ate. “You’re welcome. Do you know how long these are supposed to be in the oven?”
“Really? Wow. Didn’t know we had baking in common, though you probably bake more than me. Here’s a picture of the 1-UP shroom cake I made just last week.” He handed over his phone so they could see. “I only screwed up twice. That’s spectacular for me.”
“The more you know, I guess. Probably – between making my own bread and other assorted foods, I do it on a regular basis.” Checking out the cake, they nodded in approval. “Nice, it seems like you’ve been getting better at it.”
“I’m actually having a lot of fun.” he admitted, carefully sliding the tray of uncooked dough into the kid-sized oven. Wonder how many houses caught fire from Easy Bake Oven-related incidents. “Next time we should bake something at your house.”
“Same actually. I don’t even know how to describe why, but it’s nice.” Too many houses is probably what they would guess. They kept a carefull eye on the process to make sure it went smoothly. “Oh definitely. I do a lot of baking so it’d be nice to have some help for sure.”
“Thanks. Here’s our water.” Alfred dumped the other bowl holding dry mix into the water bowl and stirred its contents with a tiny, pink spoon. So this was what kids did in their free time before they got tablets and smartphones. “Could you please turn on the oven? I think we’re ready to start baking.”
“Cool.” It was ..strangely entertaining to go through this process of making small baked goods out of water and mix. They weren’t really sure what it was but- Saima could kind of see the appeal of such a device. “Sure – can do.”With that, they turned on the oven and gestured to it with a bit of flair – as if introducing the device. “So the show can begin.”
“Tonight’s the night we feast like kings.” Easy Bake Oven sugar cookies for dinner. Delish. “Do me a favor and open the bag of mix? I’ll go fill up this bowl with the right amount of water. Then once we’ve mixed everything, we’ll figure out how to operate the oven.” Simple, right? What could go wrong…
“Truly the time to be alive.” A real culinary adventure, honestly. “Yeah, I can do that. Might as well get this going.” Saima could only hope that this would be simple as they went to open the bag of mix.
