Her voice trailed off as she listened closely to Saima’s words. A warm smile brightened her cool-toned features, almost bringing a strange light into the room the two sat in. Adelaide was intrigued by Saima’s response; she viewed their stories as quite admirable and something she believed all ageless beings should strive to be, rather than causing strife amongst the mortals like a few deities enjoyed doing. ❝ Seeing that you’re using your time here for good, along with being a vast influence in so many peoples’ lives is something I adore, truly, ❞ Adelaide grinned. ❝ Serving as a muse for some of the world’s greatest artisans must bring quite a few interesting memories— do you mind if I pick your brain for some of your favorite stories?? ❞
Saima smiled a bit at Adelaide’s appreciation for them using their time here for good. “I just feel like it was what called to me, I was taught to be a guardian of sorts to others and I feel like there are many ways to fulfill that duty.” It was a calling that had given them much satisfaction – especially now that they’ve removed themselves from the more ‘transactional’ parts of relations among humans.
“Oh I don’t mind at all. I love telling such stories – especially in the nineteenth century, that was a really fun time for me to be around the creatives of the area.“
“It definitely suits you! And all the work you’ve put it has paid off wonderfully!” Erzsi said with enthusiasm. She was so glad they were doing well and could express themselves for who they were.
“That makes a sort of sense. I don’t totally get it, but I can see what you mean.” She laughed a little gesturing toward their demeanor. “Do you want anything to drink? I was thinking about grabbing another beer.”
“Yeah, it really makes having to deal with so much prior a little more worthwhile.“ Even just continuing to survive would have been enough, but Saima knew that they were much more excited about existing with the changes that they had made.
“Right. It’s a bit hard to explain but people can see it when it happens. As you clearly had the chance to do so tonight. I’d love a beer actually.” They found themselves craving a drink as a small reward after all this activity.
It’s worse, you know. [If his gestures get much more incensed he might take their eye out.] ‘Cos it’s just this one frog-shaped chocolate – the chocolate by the same company doesn’t cost as much. It’s just this one thing.
[the reveal of it just being the frog-shaped chocolate causes Saima to sigh a bit.] Goodness, now that’s just really specifically annoying. One thing they choose to charge more for less with. It’s not even consistent.
No no, you see they went up to 30 pence a unit, right? Last year? And that’s double what it should be by inflation. It’s two pence for every gram of chocolate. They even decreased it by, like, a quarter of its size.
…Right. [ a pause, few more beats to get the point.] Oh damn. That’s ridiculous. Sorry for the loss of chocolate. Just goes to show how these places are all too eager to cut corners to get more out of you.
“…Wow, thanks. That’s the encouragement I needed.” She huffs. “At least you’re honest. I wonder if there are any bakeries open where I can buy a cake to cry into.”
“Sorry, didn’t mean to wound you, really. Despite everything, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility. As for cakes – I’m sure you could find a tasty one nearby to indulge in.”
“ so… how old ARE you? ” is it rude to ask? absolutely. will he do it anyway? by mistake, yes; he means no offense, but the finer points of social graces sometimes slip by him. “ sorry– I just mean… you must’ve seen a lot. does it ever get annoying? like… is it true what they say– about history repeating itself… ? ” he would HATE to be stuck in some kind of endless loop, watching the same stupid mistakes over and over. but he thinks the world has changed; humanity had evolved, in a good way… “ – I mean, I HOPE we’ve gotten better; learned some things… right? ”
but how could he know for sure? he’s lived a mere twenty some years… that he KNOWS of.
A pause at the question, they know it isn’t the check the id kind of question that tends to happen. But it’s a solid question and Saima is thinking about the best way to answer. “Uh, a few millenia, at least.” That’s the best estimate that they’ve got and they are rolling with it. “I’ve seen a lot and frankly, it does get terribly annoying. Because while I’ve seen a lot of fascinating progress and ways where humans do get better – but there are definitely a lot of the same human vulnerabilities and irritating traits that never seem to change. Just adjust to the surroundings that they are in.”
